How Scotland rates kitchens

Your inspection ends in one of two words.

Scotland's food businesses are rated under the Food Hygiene Information Scheme. Your result is published online for every customer to see, and it stays there until the council inspects you again.

54,000+

food outlets across Scotland's 32 council areas are covered by the scheme.

Food Standards Scotland

Pass

The business meets the legal requirements for food hygiene.

Improvement required

The business does not yet meet them. Customers see this on your public listing until you are re-inspected.

Most problems inspectors find are routine: missing records, temperatures not logged, cleaning not documented, a blocked hand-wash sink. Each is cheap to fix if you spot it first.

How it works

A routine your team can keep, and a check before it counts.

  1. Daily checks on your phone

Fridge and freezer temperatures, cooking and reheating, cleaning, deliveries and allergens. About ten minutes a day, laid out to match your CookSafe records.

  2. Monthly photo walk-through

Photograph a set list of areas in your kitchen. We check them against what inspectors look for and send back a short list of what to fix, so you can see whether you're Ready, At risk or Not ready.

  3. Ready on inspection day

Your records, cleaning schedules and allergen information in one place, time-stamped and ready to show the inspector.

For council food teams

Records officers can trust, shared only when the business chooses.

SporeLog helps businesses keep on top of compliance between visits, and gives officers a clear record when they ask for one.

Time-stamped, never deleted

Every check carries a server time stamp. Corrections are added beside the original, not written over it.

Shared on request, not streamed

A business can send an officer a read-only summary of any period. No live feed and no new inbox to watch.

Shaped by environmental health

We are asking environmental health professionals which records help them most, and building to their answers.

Questions

Before you sign up

Is this run by my council?

No. SporeLog is an independent service from DataSpore Ltd. Your inspection is still carried out by your local council.

Does it replace CookSafe?

No. CookSafe is Food Standards Scotland's food safety management system. SporeLog helps you keep your CookSafe records and daily checks up to date.

Which areas do you cover?

Food businesses anywhere in Scotland can join the waitlist. We open founding places area by area.

Do I need any equipment?

No. A phone and the probe thermometer you already use.

What will it cost?

We're setting founding prices with our first members. Tell us in the form what you would expect to pay.

Will my records be sent to the council?

Never automatically. You decide if and when to share a read-only summary with an officer.

Can you guarantee I'll pass?

No one can. We help you find and fix problems before the inspector does.
